A life in television. A country's story on screen.
A documentary portrait of Titus Munteanu, whose work in Romanian television helped shape generations of performers and audiences.
For decades, Titus Munteanu was a defining creative force in Romanian television. Working through the constraints of the communist period and into a changing media landscape, he helped bring entertainment, music and new artistic voices into homes across the country.
Directed by Victoria Baltag, The Broadcaster weaves interviews with television archives, performances and recordings that reveal both a remarkable professional life and the cultural history unfolding around it. The result is a portrait not only of one broadcaster, but also of the shared memories of an era.
The man who shaped what Romania watched.
Titus Munteanu's career spanned decades of cultural and political transformation. In a television world shaped by censorship and limited resources, he helped create programmes that entertained audiences and opened doors for performers. His life offers a way to understand both the possibilities and the restrictions of broadcasting in Romania.

What survives when the broadcast ends?
The documentary grew from a long interview Victoria Baltag recorded with Munteanu while she was a student. Years later, she rediscovered that recording and began searching the Romanian Television archives for the programmes, performances and personalities surrounding his career.
Some of the footage had been rarely seen; other recordings were already missing. Bringing those fragments together became an act of cultural preservation, allowing viewers to revisit a changing country through the television images it left behind.

More than a programme. A stage for generations.
Television offered performers a place in Romania's cultural imagination—and gave audiences shared moments that stayed with them.
Through music, comedy and entertainment, Munteanu helped bring performers into the national spotlight. One of his best-known contributions, Școala Vedetelor (School of Stars), became an important platform for young talent.
The programme earned a Silver Rose at the 1996 Montreux festival. That honour belongs to Munteanu's television work—not to this documentary—but it shows the wider influence of the career The Broadcaster remembers.
